The University of North Carolina at Pembroke approached The LSV Partnership with a unique design problem. The Department of Art wished to expand their advanced degree program but needed to expand and improve their facilities in order to pass accreditation.

UNC-Pembroke Locklear Hall Gallery

The existing building, Locklear Hall, was landlocked by parking lots, existing campus buildings and a central quad without possibility for expansion outside the existing site constraints. The solution was to use the open existing courtyard in order to expand vertically in order to meet the program requirements set forth by the faculty. The resulting new ground floor addition has tripled the exhibition gallery size and now allows for display of large artwork, paintings, sculpture and digital media formats. Something that was limited in the existing structure. The new second story also allowed for the desire to add more faculty offices was wrapped around the gallery space with access to a central skylight for natural daylighting.
